Staying Healthy As You Age
Date: 02/27/24
As you age, maintaining a healthy lifestyle becomes even more important. Seniors are more at-risk to illness and should take extra steps to stay active and independent as long as possible.
Seniors should focus on these areas to maintain a healthy lifestyle:
- Eat a well-balanced diet. Your body may need fewer calories as you get older, but it needs more nutrients. Eating foods rich with vitamins like vegetables, lean meat and low-fat milk products can help keep your body healthy.
- Get regular checkups. You should see your doctor annually for a checkup. Checkups can monitor risk factors for disease like high blood pressure and cholesterol. They also can catch any health issues early on and increase the effectiveness of treatments.
- Stay in motion. Walking, stretching and other forms of light exercise help you stay active and can help you maintain a healthy weight. Visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website to find more ways to stay active.
Although eating right and going to the doctor are important to maintain a healthy lifestyle as you get older, so is staying social. Schedule phone calls or visits with your friends and family frequently. According to the National Institute on Aging website, being social keeps your mind active and even prevents depression and other health issues.
