How do I enroll for Medicaid or CHIP in Texas?

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are healthcare programs for eligible Texans. Superior HealthPlan can be your healthcare provider after you are approved.

There are three steps to get Medicaid or CHIP coverage from Superior HealthPlan:

Step 1: Apply (see “How can I apply for Medicaid or CHIP benefits” below)    

Step 2: Watch for your enrollment packet    

Step 3: Choose Superior HealthPlan

You can apply in one of these ways:

Texas HHSC will review your application. If you are approved, you will get information about coverage and health plan options in an enrollment packet.

Once you are approved, here are the simple steps you can take to choose Superior HealthPlan:

  • Check your mail for an enrollment packet
    from HHSC.
  • When you are filling out your enrollment
    packet, make sure you choose “Superior HealthPlan.”
  • You can also call 1-800-964-2777 (TTY 711) to join Superior.

While this isn’t required, many members decide to choose a health plan that will meet their needs. If you do not choose a plan, one will be selected for you. If you want coverage with Superior HealthPlan, you should follow the steps to choose a health plan in your enrollment packet.

Medicaid and CHIP are available for many low-income children, families, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities. Eligibility depends on your household size, income, age, and program rules. You can use the Texas HHSC prescreening tool to find out if you or a family member might qualify. To apply for coverage, you will need your ID, income, household size, address, and other information. This includes:

  • Money you get from jobs and other sources.
  • Social Security numbers and birth dates of everyone who wants to apply.
  • Costs you pay for bills, such as rent, mortgage, water, gas, electric, sewage, and phone.
  • The value of items you pay for or own, such as vehicles or money in bank accounts.
  • Money you get or pay for child support.
  • Health insurance information.

The easiest way to get help when applying for Medicaid or CHIP in Texas is to call 2-1-1 (TTY 711) toll-free, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central Time.

To apply for Medicaid or CHIP coverage, you need to apply through the Texas benefits application options listed above. After approval, you may be able to choose Superior HealthPlan as your plan.
