Manage Stress for a Healthier Mind and Body

Date: 04/22/25

We all feel stressed sometimes. It could come from school, work, family or even just everyday life. Some stress is normal, but when it becomes too much, it can hurt your mental and physical health. We’ve gathered a few tips to help you manage stress and stay healthy.

Stress that is not managed can lead to other health-related problems such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Substance use or abuse
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Inability to fight off disease or illness

There are several ways to start getting your stress under control. A few of these are:

  1. Take a break. If you’re starting to feel stressed, go for a walk, sit quietly for a few minutes or go outside to get some fresh air.
  2. Manage your time. Make a to-do list of any personal, home, school or work tasks you need to do first and make a note for which tasks can wait for another day.
  3. Try breathing exercises. Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth. Breathe in for four seconds and breathe out for four seconds. Repeat this until you feel calm.
  4. Eat a healthy diet and get enough exercise. A balanced diet keeps your immune system strong so that it can fight disease. Exercise can help lift your mood, even if it is just going for a walk.
  5. Talk with someone you trust. If you’ve tried self help but still need support, talk to a loved one or set up an appointment with a mental health provider who you can talk to about what is causing your stress.
