Summer Safety Tips

Date: 07/06/23

Summer is here, which means that children are out of school, and it is time for swimming, camping and other outdoor activities. Whatever your favorite pastime is, there are ways to have fun and stay safe doing it. Here are a few tips we have gathered to help you and your family stay safe and enjoy your favorite summer activities.

1. Swim safely. The American Red Cross advises that children wear life jackets and be under adult supervision or lifeguard  when swimming. Be aware of your surroundings while swimming in places like oceans or rivers, where the water’s current can be dangerous.

2. Beat the heat. Last year, Texas temperatures stayed above 80 degrees in the summer. Warm temperatures like this put you at risk of heat exhaustion. Whether you are walking, hiking or camping be sure to take water with you everywhere you go and stay in the shade as much as possible.

3. Keep the bugs away. Mosquitoes are not only annoying, but according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) can carry viruses and their bites can become infected if they aren’t treated correctly. Be sure to wear bug spray if you are camping or hiking, or even just spending time in the backyard this summer.

4. Use safe practices with fireworks. It is best to only watch firework shows that are organized by professionals. If you want to put on a show yourself, make sure that the fireworks are kept 500 feet away from you and your house. You should also keep water on hand and always wear protective eyewear.
