Protect Your Child's Smile
Date: 09/21/23
Most children will get their first tooth around six months of age. Start healthy dental habits early to protect a child’s smile and prevent cavities as they grow.
For babies:
- Clean their gums with a soft cloth to begin dental care.
- Brush any teeth that do come in with a soft toothbrush and plain water.
- Schedule their first appointment with the dentist when they turn one year old.
As a child grows:
- Encourage healthy habits, like eating lots of fruits and vegetables.
- Help your child brush their teeth until they are ready to do it on their own.
- Limit the amount of sugar they have, like eating too many sweets or candy.
Following these tips early can help avoid cavities in children. Cavities are also called tooth decay. As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cavities are the most common chronic condition in children in the United States. They can cause pain and infections in mouths. It’s important to teach children what will protect them from cavities.
