REQUIREMENT: Become a CANS 2.0 Certified Provider

Date: 06/28/21

As a reminder, STAR Health members are required to get a Texas Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) 2.0 Welfare Assessment within 30 days of joining Superior HealthPlan. Senate Bill (SB) 125, 84th legislative session, requires that every child 3-17 years of age entering the care of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) receives a developmentally-appropriate, comprehensive assessment. This assessment includes a trauma screening and interviews with individuals knowledgeable about the child’s needs.

The CANS 2.0 Assessment is a multi-purpose tool that facilitates linkages between the assessment process and the development of individualized service plans, and is the tool selected to fill this requirement. A certified CANS 2.0 provider must perform the assessment.

To become a CANS 2.0-certified provider:

  • Access the CANS 2.0 training at www.tcomtraining.com.  Detailed instructions on how to register for the site for the first time and how to access the training can be found here.
  • The Texas CANS Comprehensive 2.0 (Child Welfare) is the appropriate version to complete your required certification. The training cost is $12. Discount coupon codes can be requested for groups of five or more by emailing, Lauren Schmidt, Distance Learning Operations Lead, University of Kentucky, at lauren.schmidt@uky.edu.
