Tips for Staying on Track with Your Medications

Date: 04/28/25

Taking your medications as prescribed by your provider is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Medications can help treat different health conditions and prevent future problems. However, according to the American Heart Association, it is estimated that more than half of medications prescribed to people who have a chronic illness are not taken as directed. Here are a few tips to help you stick to your medication routine.

  1. Understand your medication. Make sure you know the correct name of the medication, what condition or symptom it treats and what your dose is.
  2. Take your medication at the same time every day. Take your medications as part of your daily routine. For example, consistently take your medication right after brushing your teeth.
  3. Use a pillbox. If you’re taking several medications, this can help you organize medications and keep track of whether you’ve taken them or not.
  4. Create reminders. Put a note on your bathroom mirror or refrigerator with information about your dose and when to take it, as a quick reminder you will see.

Taking your medications as prescribed is key to staying healthy and feeling your best. If you have trouble remembering or staying on track, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for additional helpful guidance and tips.
