Reminder: Billing Taxonomy and NPI Required on Claims for Wellcare By Superior HealthPlan

Date: 01/14/26

When submitting claims for Wellcare By Superior HealthPlan members, you must include a valid billing taxonomy code and the registered National Provider Identifier (NPI). Claims with missing or incomplete fields will be rejected and require a new claim submission to be considered for payment.

When is a taxonomy code required?

Billing Provider

  • A billing taxonomy code and billing NPI are required on all professional and institutional claims.
  • Claims will be rejected if either field is missing or incomplete.

Rendering Provider

  • Applies to professional claims only.
  • A rendering taxonomy is required only when a rendering NPI is submitted to identify the health care professional who performed the service.

Important reminder for Medicaid-only services

When submitting claims for Medicaid-only covered services for DSNP members, continue to submit the provider taxonomy that matches your Medicaid Provider Enrollment record. This information is required to support provider validation and avoid claim rejections.

Visit the Billing and Claims Payment chapter of the Provider Manual for more information on claims submission requirements.
