Ways for Seniors to Stay Active
Date: 05/29/26
Physical activity is important at every age. As we get older, it is even more important for long-term health because exercise slows the body’s loss of muscle and bone mass. We’ve gathered a few ways to help you stay active as you age.
Seniors can be active in many ways. Here are a few ideas to get started:
- Strength training. This doesn’t mean using heavy weights and straining yourself. You can build muscle by just doing squats, pushups or just by sitting then standing up from a chair repeatedly. If you feel comfortable with it, add some light hand weights or resistance bands.
- Cardio. Brisk walking, swimming, cycling or dancing can get your heart pumping.
- Stretching. Activities like yoga can help improve posture and help with arthritis symptoms. Or just practice stretching in general.
- Balance. Try standing on only one leg while brushing your teeth to help improve your balance. Exercises that improve balance can reduce your risk of falls.
Regular exercise can help seniors improve their mobility so they can stay active for longer. It can also help manage stress and help you live a longer, healthier life. Talk to your doctor about what kind of exercise is right for you as you age.
