Why is Breast Cancer Awareness so Important?
Date: 10/11/22
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the United States. Learning the symptoms and having regular exams can help prevent and detect breast cancer.
Some of the most common symptoms are changes in the size of the breast, breast pain, discharge, or lumps. Not everyone will show symptoms, though. The best way to detect breast cancer early is to have regular mammograms performed by your doctor. This is an x-ray of various parts of the breast that will show any abnormalities. There are ways to lower your risk of getting breast cancer:
- Exercise regularly and try to maintain a healthy weight.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Talk to your doctor about the risks birth control and hormone therapy.
- Breastfeed your children if possible.
If you need help finding a clinic to get an exam, Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has programs that fund clinics across the state where women can get a free breast exam and mammogram. You can also call Member Services to get help finding a doctor to make an appointment.
