Take Control of Your Asthma

Date: 04/09/26

Living with asthma can feel overwhelming, but it can be easier when you know what triggers your symptoms and how to handle flareups. Some triggers can’t be avoided but knowing how to manage them can help you stay in control of your asthma.

Common asthma triggers include:

  • Smoke: Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke from cigarettes or vapes. Try to stay away from wood-burning fireplaces and campfire smoke.
  • Pet hair: Keep pets out of your bedroom if possible. Vacuum often and change clothes or shower after spending a lot of time with pets.
  • Dust: Clean your home often to reduce dust. Vacuum regularly and use a damp cloth to wipe down surfaces.
  • Medications: Some medicines, like aspirin, can affect asthma. Talk to your doctor about which medicines or herbal products to avoid.
  • Outdoor allergens: Pollen from trees, grass and weeds can trigger asthma. Try to limit outdoor time during high‑pollen seasons, like spring and fall.

Talk with your doctor about making an Asthma Action Plan (PDF). This plan helps you know how to manage symptoms, take your medicine the right way and know what to do during an asthma emergency.
