WCC and VAS: Supporting Healthy Growth Beyond the Office Visit
Date: 11/06/26
The HEDIS Weight Assessment and Counseling for Nutrition and Physical Activity for Children/Adolescents (WCC) measure evaluates the percentage of members, ages 3–17, who had an outpatient visit with a primary care provider or OB/GYN and received all three of the following during the measurement period:
- Body Mass Index (BMI) percentile assessment
- Nutrition counseling
- Physical activity counseling
Completing and documenting each component supports healthy development and helps identify potential concerns early.
Why Documentation and Coding Matter
Complete documentation helps demonstrate that all required WCC components were addressed during the visit.
Documentation Tips:
- Be sure to document all components of the WCC measure on every visit.
- BMI values are not acceptable, only percentiles. Ranges are not acceptable. If plotted on a chart, a BMI chart must be used (not age-growth chart).
- Counseling for nutrition documentation pertains to eating habits and behaviors (not appetite).
- Contact members or caregivers to reschedule canceled appointments.
- Submit applicable diagnosis and procedure codes.
Accurate coding supports reporting of the WCC services provided and documented. Submit the applicable diagnosis and procedure codes, as appropriate. To locate Quality Resources for up to date information, providers can view the following resources found on the Superior QI Program webpage:
VAS That Support WCC
When counseling families about nutrition and physical activity, consider discussing available community programs, recreational opportunities, and wellness incentives that may help members achieve healthy lifestyle goals. Additionally, Superior offers members extra benefits, called Value-Added Services (VAS)* that can reinforce nutrition and physical activity recommendations to support healthy habits between visits.
Superior offers the following VAS to members that can help with WCC measures.
STAR and CHIP
- Healthy Play and Exercise Programs (Boys & Girls Clubs)
- Health Play and Exercise Programs (YMCA)
STAR Kids
- Extra-curricular activities
- Wellness Activity (non-school sports program or successful participation in a community physical activity)
* Restrictions and limitations may apply. Many VAS have specific eligibility requirements and may vary based on a member’s health program, age, location, or other factors. For the most current information, always refer to Superior's Value-Added Services webpage or contact Member Services to confirm benefit details before making recommendations.
